There is a great new website for screenwriters that will revolutionise the way filmmakers think about and wrote their screen stories. It's presented by Billy Marshall Stoneking - of Chopper fame - and is a thoroughly provocative, character-based, mediumistic approach to screenwriting. Check it out now at http://www.wheresthedrama.com

Nice to meet you too, Scott. I've been tuned into your site for a while now. The frequency with which you post makes sure I always have something to read between tasks.

I did read your feature on After Hours. It's a movie that takes so much unraveling I don't even know where to begin. It's better to just enjoy it.

Paul, I tracked back to your site after you visited Go Into The Story. Thanks for your comments re Slumdog Millionaire. Very cogent. Re After Hours: It's a gem of a movie and I featured it here as a prime example of a movie story type known as Frustration Comedies. I've added your screenwriting blog to my Friends blogroll.

Also great site Guitar Noise. I played music professionally (guitar) for 7 years. Nice to 'meet' you.

Dear Paul,

Great hook in the title, very well written, and great ending. Fun post.

I do not know the movie, and, of course, now have to see it.

I also look forward to seeing one of your movies.

Hey Chris,

Thanks for stopping by. I've been enjoying the postings and photos on your blog for few weeks now.

I'm afraid I don't own the plane crash photo you mentioned. I just thought it looked cool. And to be fair to all the freelancers trying to make a living I should take it down. The length of time that can be considered "borrowing" has probably passed.

Thanks, and see you around.

Dear Paul,

Another Canadian resident in Asia is writing to you. One who is also using the blog format as a tool to home his writing skills; I am trying to find styles that I am comfortable with, or that are comfortable with me.

Your writing is lucid and clear. I strongly suspect that I will read more in your blog and follow it. But, that is not why I am writing.

On your August 22, 2007 post you have an image of a China Airlines plane crash. From your blog I get the impression that you took the photo.

Do you own copyright on that image, and if so, may I use a copy of it on my blog in the following posting? I would include attribution on both the "alt" and the "title" descriptions of the image.

http://e-cuneiform.blogspot.com/2008/10/tales-from-field-pig-in-plane.html

Almost all the images on my blog are mine but I have no image of a plane crash, and I would like to use one on this particular posting.

If you do not have copyright, do you know who I can contact to ask for permission?

I spent the last few days working with a freelance professional photographer and now feel the need to make sure that I am completely clean on my blog.

Thank you in advance for your time, and I will continue your prose and your daily narratives.

Cheers,
Chris

Got the book back when it was first published and have enjoyed it immensely. Coincidental but very nice: the recently-realeased Universal DVD collection of Sturges' films includes all the ones whose screenplays appear in this publication.

I haven't thought too much about European or Asian films yet. Their conventions are somewhat different and rely less on structure.

There's no reason why the moral center, as I see it, can't be an anti-hero or quasi-villainous. It's not necessary to be on the side of good to deliver the message of the film. I always find the moral center to be extremely likable; and there's no reason why we can't be friends with villains, is there? I'll try and think of some examples.

Interesting, and it rings true. Have you given thought to European films at all? They might have similar conventions, but with a twist.

Can the moral center be an anti-hero, or some other quasi-villainous character? I could easily imagine a Moral Center who has made a series of awful decisions, which to all outsiders makes him *appear* to be a villain, and this in turn allows him to inform the hero's best options through the villain's own tragic experiences.
